Weeds can cause significant problems to natural ecosystems. Although there have been numerous studies on the economics of weed control, relatively few of these studies have focused on natural ecosystems. This paper addresses this gap in the literature by assessing the cost-effectiveness of a comprehensive range of control strategies for blackberry (Rubus anglocandicans) in natural environments in Australia. We developed a stochastic dynamic simulation model and a deterministic dynamic optimisation model. The stochastic model calculates the expected net present value (NPV) of a range of control strategies, including any combination of treatment options. La información experimental del presente trabajo se obtuvo al evaluar en una localidad tres variedades de fríjol (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) de las cuales se encuentra la variedad Canario -107 como precoz, la variedad Negro – Chapingo como intermedia y la variedad Negro – 150 como tardío. El rendimiento depende de componentes que surgen del ciclo biológico de la variedad, de la arquitectura de la planta, de las características de la vaina y también de las cualidades del grano por semilla. ABSTRACT: The action of herbicides on weeds that develop under water deficit can be compromised, because the routes of penetration of hydrophilic herbicides are reduced due to the lower hydration of the cuticle in these plants. Moreover, hydrophobic compounds found in the epicuticular wax coating of plants under water stress, hinder the penetration of hydrophilic compounds. Effects of burning and weed control on vegetation cover and soil organic matter compartments in the Brazilian Amazon Acta Agron. (Palmira)

Abstract The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of burning and manual control of invasive species on a Latossolo Vermelho-Amarelo soil covered with Urochloa brizantha. Five soil samples were collected for pasture and forest, at 0-5 cm depth, to determine the accumulated respiration, microbial biomass carbon (MBC), mild organic matter, total organic carbon (TOC), water soluble carbon and MBC:TOC ratio. Three groups according soil grass coverage were selected: (1) group I with 33.5% of bare soil, (2) group 2 with 90% coverage and (3) group 3 with 53.4% coverage of invasive species. Weed control has always been an important issue in agriculture. With the advent of no-till systems, soil erosion was reduced but herbicide use was increased. Organic no-till systems try to adjust reduced erosion to the no use of herbicides. Nevertheless, this adjustment is limited by the cost of mechanical weed control. This cost may be reduced by improved cultural weed control with cover crops mulches. Com o objetivo de obter uma equação matemática que, por meio de parâmetros lineares dimensionais das folhas, permita a estimativa da área foliar de Ageratum conyzoides, estudaram-se relações entre a área foliar real (Sf) e parâmetros dimensionais do limbo foliar, como o comprimento ao longo da nervura principal (C) e a largura máxima (L) perpendicular à nervura principal, em 200 limbos foliares. Foram utilizados os modelos estatísticos: linear Y = a + bx; linear simples Y = bx, geométrico Y = axb e exponencial Y = abx. Oxalis latifolia is a widely distributed weed that mainly affects corn fields, orchards, plant nurseries and gardens. Two forms of the weed have been identified: the common form, with fish-tailed leaflets, bulbils growing on stolons and dark pink flowers, and the Cornwall form, with rounder leaflets, sessile bulbils and whitish-pale pink flowers. In this study, the fresh matter production, expressed as the increase of the bulbs' fresh weight, of both forms was compared during two growing seasons in two locations. ABSTRACT: The objective of the present work was to study the influence of temperature and light on germination of seeds of Stigmaphyllon blanchetii, popularly known as rat tail. The first stage of the research evaluated the effect of three constant temperatures (20 oC, 25 oC and 30 oC) and an alternating temperature (20-30 oC). In the second stage, for simulation of different types of light, four conditions of luminosity (white, red, far red and absence of light) were used. A greenhouse trial was carried out from November 1995 to April 1996 at FCAV/UNESP, Brazil, aiming to study the dry matter production and the accumulation and distribution of macronutrients in Solanum americanum, an important weed for annual and perennial crops in Brazil.
